Project #3

For our Third project we had to make cubes that expressed one verb from Richard Serra’s Verb List. (Disclaimer- I only did six cubes, because I ran out of glue after doing three and I can’t get more. So I had to get creative.)

Process

The first thing we did was to try to make a cube out of six 4 by 4 squares and by putting it together with tape. My cube ended up looking a mess since the tape kept sticking together. After that the next thing we did was try to much some popups. I learned quickly after trying to do the two exercises that paper was going to be a challenge for me.

After the two exercises, The next thing we had to do was make a cube net that would help us make our cubes. Then using the cube net we had to make six cubes. After putting my six cubes together, I had to change my cube net and put bigger tabs since I had some gapes in my cubes. So I made three more cubes for a total of nine.

Finished Sculpture

I struggled a bit with trying to figure out how to express the verbs. I had ideas of what I wanted to do But I could not figure how to translate that into a 3D design. I also felt that my paper folding skills weren’t as strong as I wanted them to be. But I watched one Paul Jackson’s video where he just crumpled up paper and I got inspired. So I wanted to use that technique in some of my cubes. As I made my cubes I hit a roadblock when I ran out of glue. ( I might have used too much when making the actual cubes) So I had to figure out how to make a design without glue. The verbs I choose were : to remove, to fire, to dig, to crumple, to flood, and of nature. I think I did okay with what with the skills I had, also it was nice to try paper out as a medium to work with. I learned that I like to crumple and destroy paper instead of making things out of it. But after doing this project , I’ll stick to using paper for drawing.

Critique

My biggest struggle was trying to figure out how to use the verbs to make a design. I over think a lot and definitely did that with this project. My biggest success was that I made a design that I at least liked. I would take any critique and also tips on the next time I might when do think about using paper as a medium again( Even though it might not be for a long time).
